Maybe therapy’s worth a try…

So, there’s this lingering, nagging problem, this “thing” that just won’t go away, and it’s driving you crazy.  Despite your best efforts to put on a good show, to get out of bed every day and do what you have to do, you know something’s off.  You know that you’re feeling disconnected, or off course from where you want to go in life.It’s hard to share this with friends, because you feel awkward or embarrassed about it.  The few people you do tell offer you some words of encouragement, and tell you “You’re fine, you’re worrying over nothing!”  Or maybe they offer you some cliché, like “Tomorrow is a new day!”  They mean well, but they’re just not really helping.

So, maybe it’s time to see a therapist.  That’s right; go and talk to a complete stranger about some REALLY personal stuff.  Make yourself vulnerable to someone, unload all your messiness and hope that they can help you sort it out, because try as you might, you’re not able to do it yourself.  That sounds pretty daunting, right?

Yes, it can sound scary, but it doesn’t have to be, and well, in fact, it shouldn’t be.

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, take some time to find the person who’s going to be the right fit for you.  Do some research online; check out websites, online directory listings, and blog posts to get a feel for a therapist’s expertise and personal style.  Make some phone calls to therapists local to your area, and beyond the logistics of scheduling and insurance coverage, take some time to talk to them about your struggles, and see how you feel talking with them over the phone. Do they take the time to hear what you’re saying? Do you feel comfortable talking with them, like they’re understanding you? Ask them questions about their approach to their work, do they have any particular areas of training, or experience that appeal to you?

Therapy can and should be an absolutely transformative experience; it’s why I love doing this work. It’s a brave venture to admit to another person your struggles, to show up in your messy humanness and admit you don’t have it all figured out like you thought you did. Yet, when you can do this, with the right person who really hears you, and holds you up to help you discover your unique identity and potential, and guide you back towards where you want to go in life, it’s a beautiful thing.
